WEDNESDAY 06/05/19 – KATS IN TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

TODAY STARTS THE 2019 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S AND WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN AUSTIN.  BEARKAT SOPHOMORE POLE VAULTER CLAYTON FRITSCH COMPETES TODAY, SENIOR CHRIS JEFFERSON WILL COMPETE IN THE 100-METER PRELIMS TODAY, AND THE BEARKATS REPRESENTING THE 4X100-METER RELAY TEAM ARE A.J. TISDALE, JO’VAUGHN MARTIN, BRYAN HENDERSON AND ERIC CALLAWAY.

EVEN WITHOUT JOSE ALTUVECARLOS CORREA AND GEORGE SPRINGER, THE HOUSTON ASTROS ARE ROLLING TOWARD ANOTHER AL WEST TITLE.  ALEX BREGMAN HAD TWO HITS AND THREE RBI’S, AND SEVEN OTHER ASTROS DROVE IN AT LEAST ONE RUN AS HOUSTON BEAT THE SEATTLE MARINERS 11-5 TUESDAY NIGHT FOR ITS FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN.  IT’LL BE A LATE GAME TONIGHT IN SEATTLE, AS THE ASTROS AND MARINERS TAKE THE FIELD AT 9:10.  BALTIMORE’S  PEDRO SEVERINO  HIT A CAREER-HIGH THREE HOMERS LAST  NIGHT AND THWARTED TEXAS’ NINTH-INNING RALLY WITH A WILD DEFENSIVE PLAY, LIFTING THE  ORIOLES OVER THE RANGERS 12-11 IN ARLINGTON.  THE RANGERS AND ORIOLES PLAY AGAIN AT 7:00 TONIGHT.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL COMMISSIONER ROB MANFRED SAID HE DOES NOT EXPECT TEAMS TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE PROTECTIVE NETTING AROUND BALLPARKS DURING THE SEASON, ALTHOUGH HE EXPECTS CONVERSATIONS TO CONTINUE ABOUT WHETHER NETTING SHOULD BE EXTENDED.  MANFRED’S COMMENTS ON TUESDAY CAME LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER A YOUNG CHILD WAS STRUCK BY A FOUL BALL AND HOSPITALIZED IN HOUSTON. MANFRED SAID STRUCTURAL ISSUES IN EACH INDIVIDUAL STADIUM WOULD MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO MANDATE CHANGES DURING THE SEASON, BUT THE INCIDENT AT MINUTE MAID PARK WILL LEAD TO CONVERSATIONS INTO THE OFFSEASON.

KINSLEY WASHINGTON’S R-B-I SINGLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH INNING LIFTED UCLA PAST OKLAHOMA 5-4 LAST NIGHT TO WIN THE BEST-OF-THREE WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES IN A 2-0 SWEEP. IT IS THE BRUINS’ 13TH SOFTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

SERENA WILLIAMS BECOMES FIRST ATHLETE IN FORBES’ WORLD’S RICHEST SELF-MADE WOMEN.  FORBES ESTIMATES WILLIAMS’ WEALTH TO BE $225 MILLION, WHICH THE MAGAZINE REPORTS SHE EARNED MOSTLY OFF THE COURT. IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, SHE’S INVESTED IN 34 START-UPS, WITH 60% OF WILLIAMS’ INVESTMENTS GOING TO COMPANIES LED BY WOMEN OR PEOPLE OF COLOR.

TUESDAY 06/04/19 – MLB DRAFT CONTINUES

WITH ROUNDS 1 AND 2 COMPLETE, THE 2019 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT CONTINUES WITH ROUNDS 3 TO 10 TODAY AND ROUNDS 11 TO 40 ON WEDNESDAY.  ADLEY RUTSCHMAN OF OREGON STATE WENT FIRST OVERALL TO THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES ON MONDAY, WITH THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS TAKING COLLEYVILLE, TX HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL STAND OUT BOBBY WITT JR. SECOND AND CHICAGO WHITE SOX CHOOSING CALIFORNIA’S ANDREW VAUGHN AT NO. 3.  THE TEXAS RANGERS TOOK JOSH JUNG FROM TEXAS TECH WITH THEIR 8TH PICK, AND THE ASTROS SURPRISED EVERYONE AND USED THEIR 32ND PICK TO TAKE CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEAR CATCHER KOREY LEE.

ON THE PLAYING FIELD LAST NIGHT, THE ASTROS HAD A GREAT FIRST INNING.  ROBINSON CHIRINOS HOMERED TO CAP A THREE-RUN FIRST INNING, THEN HOUSTON’S BULLPEN PITCHED SIX SHUTOUT INNINGS TO BEAT THE MARINERS 4-2 FOR THEIR SIXTH WIN IN SEVEN GAMES.

THE ST. LOUIS BLUES TIED UP THE STANLEY CUP SERIES AT 2 GAMES APIECE LAST NIGHT WITH A 4-2 WIN OVER THE BRUINS.  GAME FIVE SHIFTS BACK TO BOSTON THURSDAY NIGHT.  GAME SIX WILL BE SUNDAY NIGHT IN ST. LOUIS.

IN COLLEGE SOFTBALL, UCLA ROUTED OKLAHOMA 16-3 ON MONDAY NIGHT TO TAKE A 1-0 LEAD IN THE WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES’ BEST-OF-THREE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES. THE BRUINS MATCHED THE SINGLE-GAME RECORD FOR RUNS SCORED AND EARNED THE LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY EVER FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES GAME SINCE THE THREE-GAME FORMAT STARTED IN 2005.  GAME TWO IS 7:30 THIS EVENING ON ESPN.  GAME THREE, IF NECESSARY IS 7:30 PM WEDNESDAY.

THE FRENCH OPEN QUARTERFINAL ROUND IS UNDERWAY TODAY IN PARIS.  7th SEED AMERICAN, SLOANE STEPHENS LOST IN AN UPSET TO BRIT JOHANN KONTA 6- 1, 6-4.

MONDAY 06/03/19 – FINALS KNOTTED AT A GAME EACH

IN GAME TWO OF THE N-B-A FINALS LAST NIGHT, GOLDEN STATE’S KLAY THOMPSON SCORED 25 POINTS BEFORE LEAVING WITH A HAMSTRING INJURY, STEPHEN CURRY HAD 23 AND THE WARRIORS WENT ON AN 18-0 TEAR TO START THE SECOND HALF ON THE WAY TO A 109-104 VICTORY OVER THE TORONTO RAPTORS  TIED THE SERIES AT ONE GAME APIECE.  GAMES THREE AND FOUR NOW MOVE TO OAKLAND, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT, AND GAME 5 WILL BE IN TORONTO NEXT MONDAY.

ROOKIE MYLES STRAW HAS GOT OFF TO A RUNNING START IN HIS SECOND STINT IN THE BIG LEAGUES.  STRAW HAD THREE HITS, THREE STOLEN BASES AND SCORED HIS THIRD RUN OF THE GAME ON MICHAEL BRANTLEY‘S GO-AHEAD SINGLE IN THE 12TH INNING TO HELP THE HOUSTON ASTROS COMPLETE THEIR SECOND THREE-GAME SWEEP OF THE SEASON AGAINST THE OAKLAND ATHLETICS WITH A 6-4 VICTORY ON SUNDAY.  THE ASTROS ARE OUT WEST TO BEGIN A 4-GAME SERIES TONIGHT AGAINST THE SEATTLE MARINERS.  THE TEXAS RANGERS GOT A 5-1 WIN OVER THE WOEFUL KANSAS CITY ROYALS YESTERDAY TO CAPTURE 3 OUT 4 IN THAT SERIES.  THE RANGERS RETURN TO ARLINGTON  TO BEGIN A 4-GAME HOME STAND AGAINST THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES.

KYLE BUSCH WON AT POCONO RACEWAY ON SUNDAY TO MOVE INTO A TIE FOR NINTH ON THE NASCAR CUP SERIES VICTORY LIST.  BUSCH, WHO TOPPED 200 CAREER WINS ACROSS ALL THREE NATIONAL SERIES EARLIER THIS SEASON, WON FOR THE 55TH TIME IN THE CUP AND MATCHED HALL OF FAME DRIVER RUSTY WALLACE ON THE LIST.

AT ROLAND GARROS IN PARIS, THE SECOND WEEK OF THE FRENCH OPEN IS UNDERWAY, WITH STAN WARINKA, RAFAEL NADAL, ROGER FEDERER, AND AMERICANS MADISON KEYS AND SLOANE STEPHENS ALL EARNING THEIR WAY TO THE QUARTERFINAL ROUND.

GAME 4 OF THE STANLEY CUP FINAL IS SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY BETWEEN THE BOSTON BRUINS AND THE ST. LOUIS BLUES AT ENTERPRISE CENTER IN ST. LOUIS, WITH THE BRUINS LEADING 2-1 AFTER THEIR 7-2 ROUT OF THE BLUES ON SATURDAY.

BEARKAT AND HORNET NATION IS MOURNING THE PASSING OF COACH LEROY WILKINSON.  HE PASSED AWAY SATURDAY NIGHT AFTER A BATTLE WITH CANCER. HE SERVED 30 YEARS AS COLOR ANALYST IN THE BROADCAST BOOTH FOR SAM HOUSTON STATE AND HUNTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL, BEFORE RETIRING IN 2017.

Alpha Omega Softball Receives State and District Honors

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ALPHA OMEGA LADY LIONS SOFTBALL TEAM, PLACING 4 PLAYERS ON THE ALL-STATE SQUAD AND 8 PLAYERS TO THE ALL-DISTRICT TEAM.  FRESHMAN MADELYN LOPEZ EARNED FIRST TEAM, ALL-STATE HONORS, WITH SOPHOMORES SHYLEE RITTER AND ABBEY STEWART, LANDING SECOND-TEAM HONORS AND SOPHOMORE NICOLE KOHERS RECEIVED AN HONORABLE MENTION.  JUNIOR ALLEY GLADISH WAS ALSO NAMED TO THE ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TEAM.  THE YOUNG LADIES ALSO EARNED ALL-DISTRICT FIRST TEAM HONORS, WHILE JOSIE MCMAHON, JESSE MCMAHON AND JENAYA GODFREY WERE NAMED TO THE ALL-DISTRICT SECOND-TEAM.

THE TORONTO RAPTORS HARDLY LOOKED LIKE NEWCOMERS TO THE N-B-A’S BIGGEST STAGE, CONTROLLING THE ACTION MOST OF THE WAY AGAINST A GOLDEN STATE TEAM BEGINNING ITS FIFTH STRAIGHT N-B-A FINALS APPEARANCE.  THE RAPTORS WON, 118-109, AND TAKE THEIR 1-0 LEAD INTO GAME TWO, SUNDAY NIGHT IN TORONTO.

THE TEXAS RANGERS DROPPED A HOME GAME TO KANSAS CITY LAST NIGHT, 4-2.  THE RANGERS AND ROYALS PLAY AGAIN AT 7:05 TONIGHT.  AFTER A MUCH NEEDED DAY OFF, THE ASTRO’S HEAD OUT WEST TO BEGIN A SERIES WITH THE OAKLAND A’S TONIGHT AT 9PM.

CHILD HIT BY FOUL BALL AT ASTROS-CUBS GAME

A YOUNG FAN AT WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S GAME BETWEEN THE CUBS AND ASTROS WAS STRUCK BY AN ALBERT ALMORA JR. FOUL BALL AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, SHAKING UP THE CHICAGO CENTER FIELDER AND RENEWING CALLS FOR ADDITIONAL PROTECTIVE NETTING AT MAJOR LEAGUE BALLPARKS.  ALMORA WAS VISIBLY DISTRAUGHT, FALLING TO HIS KNEES AT HOME PLATE WAS CONSOLED BY TEAMMATES. THE ASTROS SAID IN A STATEMENT. “WE ARE NOT ABLE TO DISCLOSE ANY FURTHER DETAILS AT THIS TIME. THE ASTROS SEND OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO THE ENTIRE FAMILY.”  ESPN IS REPORTING THAT THE INITIAL REPORT ON THE GIRL’S CONDITION WAS POSITIVE.  AS FOR THE GAME ITSELF, CHICAGO EDGED THE ASTROS, 2-1.  THE INJURY-RIDDEN ASTROS GET A NEEDED DAY OFF TODAY.   CARLOS CORREA WILL MISS FOUR TO SIX WEEKS WITH A FRACTURED RIB.  CORREA HAD BEEN SCRATCHED FROM TUESDAY’S GAME AGAINST THE CHICAGO CUBS DUE TO SORENESS.  IN A STATEMENT RELEASED ON WEDNESDAY, CORREA SAID THE INJURY OCCURRED “DURING A MASSAGE.”  HOUSTON HOLDS A 7.5 GAME LEAD OVER OAKLAND IN THE A-L WEST, DESPITE HAVING DEALT WITH MULTIPLE INJURIES TO KEY PLAYERS IN RECENT WEEKS. JOSÉ ALTUVE, GEORGE SPRINGER AND SEVERAL BENCH PLAYERS ARE ALL DEALING WITH INJURIES.  THE TEXAS RANGERS ESCAPED SEATTLE WITH AN 8-7 WIN YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  THEY’ RE BACK IN ARLINGTON TONIGHT TO BEGIN A 4-GAME SERIES AGAINST KANSAS CITY.

THE GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS AND TORONTO RAPTORS WILL TAKE THE COURT TONIGHT AND BEGIN THEIR QUEST TO BECOME THE 2019 N-B-A CHAMPIONS.  THE RAPTORS, LED BY FORMER FINALS M-V-P KAWHI LEONARD AND FIRST YEAR HEAD COACH NICK NURSE, ARE AFTER THEIR FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP WHILE THE WARRIORS ARE SEEKING THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT N-B-A TITLE UNDER HEAD COACH STEVE KERR.  GAME 1 OF THE NBA FINALS TIPS OFF AT 8 P.M.
