TWO SAM HOUSTON STATE BASEBALL PLAYERS WERE NAMED TO THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM ON TUESDAY.  JUNIOR PITCHERS HAYDEN WESNESKI AND NICK MIKOLAJCHAK EACH EARNED AN HONOR, WITH WESNESKI BEING NAMED TO THE FIRST TEAM AND MIKOLAJCHAK EARNING A SECOND-TEAM NOD.

YORDAN ALVAREZ‘S ASTRO TEAMMATES TOLD THE SLUGGER THEY’D FINE HIM IF HE DIDN’T HOMER IN HIS FIRST GAME FOR THE HOUSTON ASTROS.  AFTER HE CONNECTED IN HIS DEBUT THEY WARNED HIM THAT THE FINE WOULD BE DOUBLE IF HE DIDN’T KNOCK ONE OUT OF THE PARK IN HIS SECOND GAME.  SO FAR, ALVAREZ HASN’T LOST ANY MONEY.  ALVAREZ HIT ONE OF HOUSTON’S FOUR HOME RUNS TO BECOME THE FIRST PLAYER IN FRANCHISE HISTORY TO HOMER IN HIS FIRST TWO MAJOR LEAGUE GAMES AND LEAD THE ASTROS TO A 10-8 WIN OVER THE MILWAUKEE BREWERS ON TUESDAY NIGHT.  THE ASTROS AND BREWERS PLAY AGAIN AT 7:10 THIS EVENING.

BOTH TEXAS MANAGER CHRIS WOODWARD AND RED SOX MANAGER ALEX CORA AS WELL AS RED SOX OUTFIELDER ANDREW BENINTENDI WERE EJECTED FROM TEXAS’ 9-5 WIN OVER BOSTON ON TUESDAY.  THE RANGERS AND RED SOX WILL GO AGAIN AT 3:05 THIS AFTERNOON AT FENWAY.

IN WOMEN’S WORLD CUP SOCCER, ALEX MORGAN SCORED A RECORD-TYING FIVE GOALS AS THE UNITED STATES OPENED ITS CUP CAMPAIGN WITH A TOURNAMENT-RECORD 13-0 WIN OVER THAILAND IN GROUP F ON TUESDAY.  THE U.S. NEXT FACES CHILE BEFORE PLAYING SWEDEN IN ITS LAST MATCH BEFORE THE KNOCKOUT ROUNDS BEGIN.

TUESDAY 06/11/19 – FINALS GOING TO GAME 6

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS GENERAL MANAGER BOB MYERS SAID KEVIN DURANT WILL HAVE AN MRI TODAY TO DETERMINE THE SEVERITY OF THE INJURY, BUT THE EMOTIONAL LOOKS ON PLAYERS’ AND COACHES’ FACES TOLD EVEN MORE OF A STORY THAN MYERS’ WORDS COULD. LEAGUE SOURCES BELIEVE THE MRI WILL CONFIRM AN ACHILLES TEAR.

STEPHAN CURRY SCORED 31 POINTS, AND KLAY THOMPSON ADDED 26 AS THEY LED A SEASON-SAVING SURGE, LONG AFTER KEVIN DURANT WAS INJURED, TO GIVE THE WARRIORS A 106-105 VICTORY OVER THE TORONTO RAPTORS ON MONDAY NIGHT IN GAME 5 OF THE NBA FINALS.  GAME 6 IS THURSDAY NIGHT IN OAKLAND.

THE 2019 FRENCH OPEN IS IN THE BOOKS AS RAFAEL NADAL DEFEATED DOMINIC THIEM, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 FOR HIS 12TH CHAMPIONSHIP.  ON THE WOMEN’S SIDE, THE NO. 8-SEEDED ASHLEIGH BARTY TOOK CONTROL RIGHT AT THE START OF THE FRENCH OPEN FINAL,  BEATING UNSEEDED MARKETA VONDROUSOVA 6-1, 6-3.  THE TENNIS WORLD NOW TURNS ITS EYES TO ENGLAND AS THE 2019 WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN JULY 1ST.

FRIDAY 06/07/19 – BEARKATS RECEIVE HONORS

SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETES PICKED UP NATIONAL HONORS ON THURSDAY.  BEARKAT FOOTBALL PLAYERS NATHAN STEWART AND ZYON MCCOLLUM WERE EACH NAMED TO THE HERO SPORTS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA TEAM.  STEWART, A SENIOR WIDE RECEIVER, WAS NAMED TO THE SECOND TEAM, WHILE MCCOLLUM, A JUNIOR DEFENSIVE BACK, WAS NAMED TO THE THIRD TEAM.  SAM HOUSTON SOFTBALL PITCHER LINDSEY McLEOD WAS NAMED TO THE 2019 GOOGLE CLOUD ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM.  THIS IS THE SECOND TIME McLEOD HAS BEEN SELECTED TO THE ALL-AMERICA TEAM, EARNING THIRD-TEAM HONORS IN 2018. SHE GRADUATED IN MAY WITH A 4.0 GRADE-POINT AVERAGE IN PUBLIC HEALTH.

ON YESTERDAY’S MAJOR LEAGUE SCOREBOARD, THE ASTROS TOPPED SEATTLE, 8-7 IN 14 INNINGS.  THE ASTROS ARE BACK IN HOUSTON THIS EVENING TO HOST BALTIMORE AT 7:10.  THE ORIOLES LOST TO THE TEXAS RANGERS YESTERDAY, 4-3.  THE RANGERS WELCOME THE OAKLAND A’S TO ARLINGTON FOR A 7:05 GAME TONIGHT.

GAME 4 OF THE N-B-A FINALS IS AT 8:00 TONIGHT IN TORONTO.  THE RAPTORS LEAD THE SERIES 2-1.

THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES HAVE SIGNED FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK AND FORMER NORTH DAKOTA STATE BISON CARSON WENTZ TO A FOUR-YEAR EXTENSION THROUGH THE 2024 SEASON.

WITH A 2-1 WIN IN GAME 5, THE ST. LOUIS BLUES ARE ON THE CUSP OF THEIR FIRST-EVER STANLEY CUP, AND HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN IT AT HOME, SUNDAY NIGHT.

THE NASCAR CIRCUIT SCHEDULE BRINGS US THE MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES AT MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 1:00.

THURSDAY 06/06/19 – FRITSCH SETS RECORD AND 4 KATS DRAFTED BY MLB

BEARKAT SOPHOMORE POLE VAULTER CLAYTON FRITSCH SET A PERSONAL BEST AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS ON WEDNESDAY AND IN THE PROCESS BECAME THE FIRST SAM HOUSTON STATE ATHLETE TO MEDAL AT THE OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP. FRITSCH JUMPED 18-FEET, 10 ¼ INCHES WHICH ALSO SET A NEW SCHOOL RECORD TO FINISH THIRD AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP. IN OTHER ACTION ON WEDNESDAY THE MEN’S 4X100 RELAY TEAM COMPETED AT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR. THEY FINISHED 7TH IN THEIR HEAT AND DIDN’T ADVANCE TO FRIDAY’S FINAL.  CHRIS JEFFERSON, WHO HAD QUALIFIED TO RUN IN THE 100 METER DASH, WAS INJURED AND DIDN’T RUN ON WEDNESDAY.  MORE INFORMATION AT GOBEARKATS.COM.

FOUR BEARKAT PLAYERS WERE SELECTED AS PART OF THE 2019 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.  HAYDEN WESNESKI WAS CHOSEN IN ROUND 6 BY THE NEW YORK YANKEES, JORDAN CANNON IS GOING TO THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES, NICK MIKOLAJCHAK TO THE CLEVELAND INDIANS AND HUNTER HEARN TO THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.

GOLDEN STATE WARRIOR STEPHEN CURRY HAD A STELLAR NIGHT, SCORING 47 POINTS.  HOWEVER, IT WASN’T ENOUGH TO STOP THE RAPTORS LAST NIGHT.  KAWHI LEONARDKYLE LOWRY AND DANNY GREEN  LET IT RIP ON THE GOLDEN STATE FLOOR, WINNING 123-109, INCLUDING A 3-POINT CLINIC PUT ON BY DANNY GREEN, HITTING 6 BUCKETS FROM BEYOND THE ARC.  THE RAPTORS HAVE THE MOMENTUM AGAIN WITH A 2-1 LEAD IN THE SERIES.  TORONTO WILL TRY TO STEAL ANOTHER GAME ON THE WARRIOR’S HOME COURT, FRIDAY NIGHT AT 8:00.

THE ASTROS WERE ON THE WRONG END OF A MAGICAL MARINER NIGHT IN SEATTLE YESTERDAY, GETTING ROUTED 14-1, THANKS TO FIVE SEATTLE HOMERS AND A COMPLETE GAME BY MIKE LEAKE.  HOUSTON’S FIVE-GAME WINNING STREAK WAS SNAPPED WITH ITS MOST LOPSIDED DEFEAT SINCE A 17-2 LOSS TO DETROIT IN MAY 2013.  THE ASTROS PLAY ONE MORE TIME IN SEATTLE AT 2:40 THIS AFTERNOON, BEFORE HEADING HOME TO HOST BALTIMORE FRIDAY NIGHT.  THE TEXAS RANGERS NEEDED 12 INNINGS TO GET PAST THE ORIOLES YESTERDAY, 2-1.  THEY PLAY AGAIN IN ARLINGTON THIS EVENING AT 7:00.
