IN HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS LAST NIGHT, THE HORNETS EDGED OAK RIDGE, 51-50, WITH AN EXCITING GAME WINNING BASKET, AS THE CLOCK WAS RUNNING DOWN.  THE LADY HORNETS ALSO WON A CLOSE GAME YESTERDAY, ON THE ROAD IN LUFKIN, BEATING THE LADY PANTHERS, 30-29.  THE NEW WAVERLY BULLDOGS BEAT ALPHA OMEGA, 68-57…WHILE THE LADY DOGS BEAT THE LADY LIONS, 64-19.

IN THIS WEEK’S EDITION OF THE FBS COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS, THE TOP 5 ARE: L-S-U, OHIO STATE, CLEMSON, GEORGIA, AND ALABAMA.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL IS ON THE SCHEDULE TODAY:  THE HUNTSVILLE LADY HORNETS ARE IN LUFKIN THIS EVENING FOR A 6:30 GAME, WHILE THE HORNET BOYS ARE AT OAK RIDGE AT 7:00.  THE NEW WAVERLY BULLDOGS HOST THE ALPHA OMEGA LIONS, WITH THE GIRLS PLAYING AT 6:00 AND THE BOYS AT 7:30.

THE LOS ANGELES CHARGERS POST-SEASON HOPES MAY HAVE EVAPORATED LAST NIGHT ON THE ARM OF PHILIP RIVERS AND HIS FOUR INTERCEPTIONS.  THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS WERE 24-17 WINNERS.

IT WAS YET ANOTHER GOOD NIGHT FOR JAMES HARDEN, AS PUT IN 36 POINTS FOR THE ROCKETS IN THE 132-108 WHIPPING OF THE PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS…MEANWHILE, UP IN DALLAS, LUKA DONCIC SCORED A CAREER-HIGH 42 POINTS TO GO WITH 12 ASSISTS AND 11 REBOUNDS AS THE MAVERICKS HELD OFF THE SKIDDING SAN ANTONIO SPURS.  DONCIC IS THE SECOND-YOUNGEST PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY TO HAVE A 40-POINT TRIPLE-DOUBLE.

…AND FINALLY, SOME BASEBALL NEWS…YULI GURRIEL HAS AGREED TO AN $8.3 MILLION, ONE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH THE HOUSTON ASTROS, GIVING HIM A $300,000 RAISE FROM HIS SCHEDULED SALARY FOR NEXT SEASON.  GURRIEL HIT .298 AND SET CAREER BESTS WITH 31 HOMERS AND 104 RBIS IN 2019 AS THE ASTROS WON THE AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THREE SEASONS.

 

 

Hornets Advance to Area Round of Playoffs

THE HUNTSVILLE HORNETS SWARMED INTO MARSHALL FRIDAY NIGHT AND LEFT THE MAVERICKS REELING, WINNING THE GAME, 35-12.  THE HORNETS NOW PREPARE FOR THE CROSBY COUGARS, A TEAM THAT HUNG 70 POINTS ON HOUSTON WILLOWRIDGE FRIDAY NIGHT IN THEIR HOME PLAYOFF GAME.  THE HORNETS AND COUGARS WILL MEET AT RANDALL REED STADIUM IN NEW CANEY, SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT 2:00 PM.  DUE TO CONFLICTING SCHEDULES WITH SAM HOUSTON STATE, THE HORNET GAME WILL BROADCAST ON 104-9 THE HITS, WITH LIVE COVERAGE BEGINNING AT 1:30.

THE ALPHA OMEGA LIONS HUNG UP THEIR CLEATS ON 2019 AFTER A 36-28 LOSS TO OUR LADY OF THE HILLS IN THE TAPPS 2-A PLAYOFFS.

THE SAM HOUSTON STATE BEARKATS COULD NOT OVERCOME FOUR COSTLY TURNOVERS ON SATURDAY AS THE NORTHWESTERN STATE DEMONS PULLED A 31-28 UPSET AT BOWERS STADIUM.  GO-BEARKATS-DOT-COM REPORTS THAT DESPITE THE LOSS, THE BEARKATS ARE STILL ALIVE FOR A SHARE OF THE CONFERENCE TITLE IF THEY WIN SATURDAY AGAINST HOUSTON BAPTIST AND RECEIVE HELP FROM OTHER TEAMS AROUND THE LEAGUE.  THE BEARKATS AND HUSKIES MEET AT BOWERS STADIUM FOR SAM HOUSTON’S REGULAR SEASON FINALE, SATURDAY AT NOON.  THE BEARKAT PREGAME SHOW ON 101.7 KSAM BEGINS AT 11:30.

IN PRO SPORTS OVER THE WEEKEND, THE HOUSTON TEXANS LOOKED CLUELESS AGAINST BALTIMORE, AS THE RAVENS EASILY WON, 41-7. ..THE DALLAS COWBOYS BEAT DETROIT, 35-27…AND TONIGHT ON MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS VISIT THE LOS ANGELES CHARGERS.

JAMES HARDEN HAD ANOTHER BIG GAME SATURDAY, CONTRIBUTING 49 POINTS INI THE ROCKETS WIN OVER  THE TIMBERWOLVES, 125-105.  THE ROCKETS ARE BACK HOME TO HOST PORTLAND TONIGHT AT 7:00.  THE DALLAS MAVERICKS WERE 110-102 WINNERS OVER TORONTO, AND THE SPURS LOST TO PORTLAND SATURDAY, 121-116.  TONIGHT THE SPURS AND THE MAVERICKS WILL FACE OFF IN DALLAS AT 7:30.

KYLE BUSCH EMERGED FROM THE JOE GIBBS RACING JUGGERNAUT AS NASCAR’S LATEST CHAMPION, WINNING HIS SECOND TITLE SUNDAY AFTER TEAMMATES DENNY HAMLIN AND MARTIN TRUEX JR. WERE SLOWED BY PIT-ROAD MISTAKES.  BUSCH WON THE SEASON FINALE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY TO SNAP A 21-RACE LOSING STREAK.  BUSCH JOINED SEVEN-TIME CHAMPION JIMMIE JOHNSON AS THE ONLY ACTIVE DRIVERS WITH MULTIPLE TITLES.

STARTING WITH HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SCHEDULES:  THE HUNTSVILLE HORNETS TAKE ON THE MARSHALL MAVERICKS IN MARSHALL TONIGHT IN THE OPENING ROUND OF THE 5-A, DIVISION 2 PLAYOFFS.  LIVE BROADCAST ON 101.7 KSAM BEGINS AT 7:10 THIS EVENING.  THE WINNER WILL PLAY EITHER CROSBY OR FORT BEND WILLOWRIDGE.  THE ALPHA OMEGA LIONS PLAY OUR LADY OF THE HILLS OF KERRVILLE TONIGHT IN LEANDER, IN THE TAPPS, 6-MAN, DIVISION 2 PLAYOFFS.  ANDERSON-SHIRO PLAYS DANGERFIELD TONIGHT IN DANGERFIELD, WITH THE WINNER PLAYING EITHER GRAND SALINE OR BLUE RIDGE.  COLDSPRING-OAKHURST WAS ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFFS LAST NIGHT, LOSING TO EAST CHAMBERS, 42-20.

A BREW-HA-HA LAST NIGHT IN CLEVELAND WHEN  BROWNS DEFENSIVE END MYLES GARRETT WAS EJECTED IN THE CLOSING SECONDS OF THURSDAY NIGHT’S GAME AGAINST THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS AFTER RIPPING THE HELMET OFF QUARTERBACK MASON RUDOLPH AND STRIKING HIM IN THE HEAD WITH IT.  BROWNS DEFENSIVE TACKLE LARRY OGUNJOBI AND PITTSBURGH CENTER MAURKICE POUNCEY ALSO WERE EJECTED.  CLEVELAND WON THE GAME, 21-7.  ON THE WEEKEND N-F-L SCHEDULE, BOTH TEXAS TEAMS ARE ON THE ROAD FOR NOON GAMES:  THE TEXANS PLAY BALTIMORE AND THE COWBOYS PLAY DETROIT.

IN THE N-B-A LAST NIGHT, THE MAVERICKS LOST TO THE KNICKERBOCKERS, 106-103, AND ON TONIGHT’S DOCKET, THE ROCKETS HOST THE INDIANA PACERS, AND THE SPURS ARE ON THE ROAD TO ORLANDO.

YESTERDAY WAS NATIONAL SIGNING DAY, WITH STUDENTS ANNOUNCING THEIR INTENTIONS TO PLAY FOR THE COLLEGE OF THEIR CHOICE.  THE HUNTSVILLE HORNETS ARE SENDING FOUR YOUNG LADIES TO PLAY SOFTBALL AT THE NEXT LEVEL:  TAYLOR PESILLO HAS COMMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF FINDLEY, HANNAH LANGLAIS TO ALVIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, MADELINE KNAPP TO ST. THOMAS, AND MALLORY WIGGINS TO HILL COLLEGE.

THE WILLIS LADYKATS ARE ALSO SENDING FOUR SOFTBALL PLAYERS:  MADISON MATRANGA SIGNED WITH ODESSA COLLEGE, HANNAH EARLS HAS COMMITTED TO TEXAS STATE, ASHLEY VALLEJO IS GOING TO MCNEESE STATE, AND MASON CREACY SIGNED WITH MURRAY STATE.

SAM HOUSTON STATE SIGNED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO LETTERS OF INTENT YESTERDAY AS WELL.  THE BASEBALL PROGRAM SIGNED SEVEN NEW FACES TO THE BEARKAT ROSTER, WOMEN’S SOFTBALL ADDED EIGHT, AND WOMEN’S SOCCER ADDED FIVE.

ON THE SCHEDULE TODAY, THE LADY HORNETS ARE PLAYING BASKETBALL AT THE GANDER TIPOFF CLASSIC AT BAYTOWN LEE, THE BEARKAT WOMEN ARE IN LUBBOCK TO PLAY TECH AT 6:00, AND BEARKAT VOLLEYBALL PLAYS IN NEW ORLEANS AT 6:30.

HOUSTON ASTROS ACE JUSTIN VERLANDER WAS ANNOUNCED AS THIS YEAR’S AMERICAN LEAGUE CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER, EDGING TEAMMATE GERRIT COLE.  VERLANDER RECEIVED 17 FIRST-PLACE VOTES COMPARED TO 13 FOR COLE IN BALLOTING BY THE BASEBALL WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA.  THE NEW YORK METSJACOB DEGROM WAS NAMED THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER, RECEIVING 29 OF 30 FIRST-PLACE VOTES.

ON THE N-B-A HARDWOOD LAST NIGHT, JAMES HARDEN PUT IN 47-POINTS, LEADING THE ROCKETS TO A 102-93 WIN OVER THE CLIPPERS.  THE MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES WERE WINNERS OVER THE VISITING SPURS, 129-114.  ON TONIGHT’S SCHEDULE, THE DALLAS MAVERICKS ARE IN NEW YORK CITY TO PLAY THE KNICKS AT 7:00.
