ESPN REPORTS THAT SAM HOUSTON STATE BASEBALL HEAD COACH MATT DEGGS, HAS BEEN NAMED THE NEW HEAD COACH AT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE.  JUST 15 DAYS AFTER THE DEATH OF LONGTIME RAGIN’ CAJUN BASEBALL COACH TONY ROBICHAUX, THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HAS ANNOUNCED THAT MATT DEGGS WAS AT THE TOP OF THEIR CANDIDATE LIST FROM THE START.  DEGGS RETURNS TO THE CAJUNS AFTER FIVE SEASONS AS HEAD COACH AT SAM HOUSTON STATE, WHERE HE AMASSED A 187-118 OVERALL RECORD.  HIS BEARKATS WON THREE REGULAR SEASON SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TITLES AND MADE TWO NCAA APPEARANCES AND ONE SUPER REGIONAL APPEARANCE.

EDUARDO ESCOBAR AND HIS ARIZONA TEAMMATES JUMPED ALL OVER TEXAS’ PITCHERS EN ROUTE TO A RECORD TYING NIGHT.  ESCOBAR HOMERED TWICE, AND THE DIAMONDBACKS’ RED-HOT BATS TIED A FRANCHISE RECORD FOR A NINE-INNING GAME WITH 21 HITS WHILE THUMPING THE TEXAS RANGERS 19-4.  THE RANGERS GET THE DAY OFF TODAY, TO SIT AND THINK ABOUT THEIR LIVES, BEFORE HEADING DOWN I-45 TO BEGIN A WEEKEND SERIES WITH THE ASTROS TOMORROW NIGHT.

WEDNESDAY 07/17/19 – NEW ASSISTANT COACH FOR KATS

GOBEARKATS.COM REPORTS SAM HOUSTON STATE TRACK AND FIELD COACH DAVE SELF HAS ANNOUNCED THE ADDITION OF PAETYN REVELL TO HIS STAFF AS AN ASSISTANT COACH FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON.  REVELL SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER COACH AT TEXAS TECH LAST SEASON FOLLOWING A STELLAR CAREER AS A TRIPLE JUMPER FOR THE RED RAIDERS FROM 2014-17. HER BROTHER SAIGE REVELL WAS A TRIPLE JUMPER FOR THE BEARKATS BEFORE GRADUATING IN MAY.

THE ASTROS WERE EXPECTING POSSIBLE RETALIATION LAST NIGHT AGAINST THE ANGELS FOR THE HOME PLATE COLLISION BETWEEN JAKE MARISNICK AND ANGEL CATCHER JONATHAN LUCROY, SO WHEN NOE RAMIREZ DRILLED MARISNICK IN THE BACK WITH A HIGH PITCH, THINGS GOT A LITTLE TENSE.  THE ASTROS LOST TO THE ANGELS LAST NIGHT, 7-2.  GERRITT COLE GETS THE START AGAINST THE ANGELS TONIGHT AT 9:05PM.

THE RANGERS LOST AT HOME LAST NIGHT, 9-2 TO THE DIAMONDBACKS.  THEY WILL SQUARE OFF AGAIN AT 7:05 THIS EVENING.

IT’S OFFICIAL: RUSSELL WESTBROOK IS NOW A MEMBER OF THE HOUSTON ROCKETS.  THE LONG-REPORTED DEAL THAT HAS THE ROCKETS ACQUIRING WESTBROOK FROM THE OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER IN EXCHANGE FOR CHRIS PAUL, TWO FUTURE FIRST-ROUND PICKS AND THE RIGHTS TO TWO FIRST-ROUND SWAPS.

TUESDAY 07/16/19 – ASTRO’S STILL IN FIRST DESPITE ANOTHER LOSS

ALBERT PUJOLS GOT THREE HITS AND DROVE IN THREE RUNS, AND THE ANGELS REMAINED UNBEATEN SINCE THE ALL-STAR BREAK WITH A 9-6 VICTORY OVER THE HOUSTON ASTROS ON MONDAY NIGHT.  GEORGE SPRINGER HIT TWO HOMERS FOR THE ASTROS, WHO OPENED A FOUR-GAME SERIES WITH THEIR THIRD LOSS IN FIVE GAMES.  JOSE ALTUVE PLAYED SHORTSTOP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THREE YEARS AFTER A DEFENSIVE SWITCH IN THE LATE INNINGS FOR THE ASTROS, WHOSE PATCHWORK LINEUP HASN’T HURT THEIR CUSHION IN THE AL WEST YET.  THE ASTROS WILL CALL UP A PITCHER FROM THE MINORS FOR TONIGHT’S GAME IN LOS ANGELES.  FIRST PITCH AT 9:05.

HOUSTON TEXANS LINEBACKER JADEVEON CLOWNEY DID NOT AGREE TO A LONG-TERM DEAL BY MONDAY’S DEADLINE TO SIGN PLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN FRANCHISED.  NO TRADE IS IN THE WORKS FOR HIM EITHER.  CLOWNEY IS EXPECTED TO MISS MOST, IF NOT ALL, OF TRAINING CAMP, AS HE STILL HASN’T SIGNED HIS FRANCHISE TENDER, WHICH IS WORTH $15.967 MILLION FOR THE 2019 SEASON.  THE TEXANS TAGGED CLOWNEY AS A LINEBACKER RATHER THAN AS A DEFENSIVE END.  THE NFL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION IS ANTICIPATED TO FILE A GRIEVANCE AGAINST THE TEXANS.

ANOTHER HUNTSVILLE BALL TEAM IS MAKING THE COMMUNITY PROUD TODAY.  THE 12-U SOFTBALL TEAM, THE HUNTSVILLE HAVOK, IS HEADED TO THE U-S-A GIRLS FAST PITCH SOUTHERN NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT IN COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, JULY 24THTHROUGH THE 28TH.  FUNDRAISING EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY, INCLUDING A GO-FUND-ME PAGE FOR THE TEAM.  CONTACT COACH JAKE DIXON FOR DETAILS AT 936-714-2705.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC AND ROGER FEDERER  DRAINED ALMOST EVERY LAST POINT THEY COULD POSSIBLY GET OUT OF THE WIMBLEDON FINAL YESTERDAY.  THE FIFTH-SET TIEBREAKER WAS THE FIRST IN ANY MEN’S FINAL AT THE FOUR GRAND SLAMS, AND AT FOUR HOURS AND 57 MINUTES, IT WAS THE LONGEST FINAL IN WIMBLEDON HISTORY.  THE TOP-SEEDED DJOKOVIC DEFEATED FEDERER 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12, TO CLAIM HIS FIFTH WIMBLEDON TROPHY.  THE LONG, GRINDING MATCH WAS IN CONTRAST TO THE WOMEN’S FINAL SATURDAY MORNING, WHEN SIMONA HALEP STAYED COOL AND COMPOSED AS SHE ROUTED SERENA WILLIAMS, 6-2, 6-2, TO QUICKLY WIN HER FIRST WIMBLEDON TITLE.  SERENA CONGRATULATED SIMONA, SAYING “SHE PLAYED OUT OF HER MIND” AND ADMITTED TO FEELING LIKE A DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS AGAINST HER.

JUSTIN VERLANDER SHOOK OFF A SHAKY FIRST INNING WITH THE HELP OF HIS ROOKIE SHORTSTOP.  THE RESULT WAS A FOUR-GAME SERIES SPLIT FOR THE HOUSTON ASTROS AGAINST THE TEXAS RANGERS.  THE EIGHT-TIME ALL-STAR FOLLOWED A TWO-RUN FIRST INNING WITH FIVE NO-HIT INNINGS AND JOSE ALTUVE HIT HOUSTON’S FRANCHISE-RECORD NINTH GRAND SLAM OF THE SEASON AS THE ASTROS BEAT THE RANGERS 12-4 ON SUNDAY.  THE RANGERS GET THE DAY OFF TODAY WHILE THE ASTROS ARE IN LOS ANGELES TO BEGIN A SERIES WITH THE ANGELS TONIGHT AT 9:05.

THE HUNTSVILLE EIGHTS AND UNDER PINTO ALL-STARS HAVE EARNED A TRIP TO THE PINTO WORLD SERIES IN YOUNGSVILLE, LOUISIANA, JULY 24TH-27TH, AND THE TEAM WILL HOLD SEVERAL FUNDRAISERS AROUND THE COMMUNITY TO PAY FOR TRAVEL AND TOURNAMENT EXPENSES.  TODAY, THE TEAM WILL BE AT FIRST FINANCIAL BANK IN HUNTSVILLE FROM 10AM-5PM.  TOMORROW, THEY WILL SET UP AT THE HUNTSVILLE DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET, AND SUNDAY, YOU CAN FIND THEM AT BROOKSHIRE BROTHERS FROM 10AM-1PM.

THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE UNVEILED ITS PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS ON THURSDAY MORNING WITH SIX SAM HOUSTON STATE BEARKATS FINDING THEIR WAY ONTO THE SQUADS: SENIOR WIDE RECEIVER NATHAN STEWART AND JUNIOR DEFENSIVE BACK ZYON MCCOLLUM WERE EACH NAMED TO THE PRESEASON FIRST TEAM.  NAMED TO THE SECOND TEAM WERE SENIOR TIGHT END WOODY BRANDOM, SENIOR DEFENSIVE END ERICK FOWLER AND SENIOR LINEBACKERS HUNTER BROWN AND ROYCE SEE.  THE BEARKATS WILL OPEN UP THE 2019 SEASON ON AUGUST 31 AT NEW MEXICO BEFORE RETURNING TO HUNTSVILLE TO HOST OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE IN THE HOME OPENER. RANGER PITCHER LANCE LYNN MATCHED HIS SEASON HIGH WITH 11 STRIKEOUTS IN SEVEN STRONG INNINGS AS THE RANGERS BEAT THE AL WEST-LEADING HOUSTON ASTROS 5-0 LAST NIGHT.  ASTRO ALL-STAR GERRITT COLE GETS THE START AGAINST THE RANGERS TONIGHT AT 7:05.

THE OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER HAVE AGREED TO A BLOCKBUSTER TRADE THAT WILL SEND RUSSELL WESTBROOK TO THE HOUSTON ROCKETS, WHERE HE’LL BE REUNITED WITH JAMES HARDEN.  THE ROCKETS WILL SEND GUARD CHRIS PAUL, TWO PROTECTED FIRST-ROUND PICKS FROM 2024 AND 2026 AND TWO PICK SWAPS FROM 2021 AND 2025 TO THE THUNDER.

THE WIMBLEDON WOMEN’S SEMI-FINALS YESTERDAY WAS A DISPLAY OF POWER AS SIMONA HALEP OVERWHELMED ELINA SVITOLINA, 6-1, 6-3.  SERENA WILLIAMS PUT ON A CLINIC, BULLDOGGING BARBORA STREETSOVA 6-1, 6-2.  SERENA AND HALEP WILL PLAY FOR THE TROPHY ON SATURDAY MORNING.  IT’S THE MEN’S SEMI-FINALS THIS MORNING WITH #1 SEED NOVAK DJOKAVICH CURRENTLY PLAYING ROBERTO BAUTISTA AGUT.  THEN IT’S #3 RAFAEL NADAL AND #2 SEED ROGER FEDERER.  THE LAST TIME THEY FACED EACH OTHER AT WIMBLEDON WAS IN THE 2008 FINAL, WHEN NADAL CAME OUT ON TOP AFTER THE MARATHON 5 HOUR MATCH, THAT AWARDED HIM IS ONLY WIMBLEDON TITLE.
