YESTERDAY, AT THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT, THE BEARKATS TRAILED INCARNATE WORD, 2-1 FOR MOST OF THE GAME UNTIL THEY RALLIED TO TIE IT IN THE EIGHTH INNING ON BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLES BY SENIOR HUNTER HEARN AND SOPHOMORE JACK ROGERS. IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH, WITH CARDINAL SHEA GUTIERREZ ON 2ND BASE, U-I-W FRESHMAN MICHAEL GARZA SINGLED, ALLOWING GUTIERREZ TO SCORE AND END THE GAME, AND THE TOURNAMENT FOR THE BEARKATS.

IN THE N-B-A EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS LAST NIGHT, KAWHI LEONARD SCORED 35 POINTS TO LEAD TORONTO PAST MILWAUKEE, 105-99, ON THE BUICKS HOME FLOOR, TO TAKE A 3-2 LEAD IN THE SERIES.  THE RAPTORS CAN CLOSE OUT THE SERIES IN TORONTO ON SATURDAY NIGHT.  THE TIP-OFF IS AT 7:30 ON T-N-T.

THE ASTROS WERE BLANKED BY THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX YESTERDAY, 4-0.  HOUSTON HOSTS THE BOSTON RED SOX TONIGHT AT 7:10.  THE RANGERS ARE OUT WEST TONIGHT TO PLAY THE ANGELS AT 9:00.

THURSDAY 05/23/19 – KATS LOSE FIRST GAME TAKE ON CARDS FOR SECOND GAME – TAKE

IT TOOK NO. 8 TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI TO HAND THE TOP-SEEDED SAM HOUSTON STATE BEARKATS A 2-1 DEFEAT IN THE OPENING ROUND OF THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AT CONSTELLATION FIELD.  THE BEARKATS NOW TAKE ON INCARNATE WORD AT NOON TODAY ON 101.7 KSAM.  THE CARDINALS LOST LAST NIGHT TO MCNEESE STATE, 2-1, SETTING UP THE MATCH WITH THE BEARKATS.  IN OTHER TOURNAMENT GAMES, CENTRAL ARKANSAS DEFEATED NORTHWESTERN, 2-0, STEPHEN F. AUSTIN BEAT SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA, 2-0.

IT WAS ALL FUN AND GAMES YESTERDAY IN SUGARLAND.  FOR THE SECOND-STRAIGHT YEAR, THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE HOME RUN DERBY CAME DOWN TO A SWING-OFF WITH CENTRAL ARKANSAS INFIELDER HUNTER HICKS BESTING STEPHEN F. AUSTIN’S MANNY VASQUEZ AND SAM HOUSTON STATE’S HUNTER HEARN FOR THE PERSONALIZED CHAMPIONSHIP BELT.
HICKS AND VASQUEZ EACH HIT SEVEN LONG-BALLS IN THE BONUS ROUND, BUT HICKS WAS CROWNED THE WINNER BY VIRTUE THE TIEBREAKER OF EARLIEST HOME RUN. BEARKAT HUNTER HEARN FINISHED THE BONUS ROUND WITH FOUR HOME RUNS.

TODAY, THE BUSINESS OF A TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GETS UNDERWAY AT 9AM, WITH SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA TAKING ON STEPHEN F. AUSTIN.  AT NOON, IT’S CENTRAL ARKANSAS VERSUS NORTHWESTERN STATE, AND THE #1 SEEDED BEARKATS TAKE ON TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI AT 4:00PM, AND IN THE NIGHTCAP, IT’S INCARNATE WORD AND MCNEESE STATE.  ALL BEARKAT GAMES WILL BE BROADCAST LIVE ON 101.7 KSAM.  IF THE BEARKATS WIN THIS AFTERNOON, THEY WILL PLAY AGAIN AT 7:00 PM THURSDAY…A LOSS THOUGH WILL HAVE THE KATS PLAYING AT NOON TOMORROW.

SAM HOUSTON STATE CLAIMED SEVEN SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2019, INCLUDING FIVE MEN’S TITLES TO WIN THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE COMMISSIONER’S CUP FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR.  WITH THE FIVE MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS YEAR, THE BEARKATS WILL STAKE CLAIM TO THE MEN’S ALL-SPORTS TROPHY AS WELL. CONGRATULATIONS TO BEARKAT ATHLETICS.

ON THE BIG LEAGUE DIAMONDS YESTERDAY, THE ASTROS AND JUSTIN VERLANDER GOT THE WIN WITH A 5-1 VICTORY OVER THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX.  THE ASTROS AND SOX PLAY AGAIN AT 7:10 TONIGHT.  MEANWHILE IN ARLINGTON, THE RANGERS GOT ANOTHER WIN AGAINST SEATTLE, BEATING THE MARINERS, 5-3.  THE RANGERS AND MARINERS WILL PLAY A DAY GAME AT 1:05 THIS AFTERNOON.

THE TORONTO RAPTORS EVENED UP THE EASTERN CONFERENCE SERIES FINAL LAST NIGHT AT 2-2, ROUTING THE BUCKS 120-102.  THE SERIES SHIFTS BACK TO MILWAUKEE ON THURSDAY NIGHT.

IN THE N-H-L PLAYOFFS LAST NIGHT, ST. LOUIS ELIMINATED SAN JOSE 5-1, TO ADVANCE TO THEIR FIRST STANLEY CUP FINAL SINCE 1970.  THE BLUES WILL TRAVEL TO BOSTON FOR GAME ONE ON MEMORIAL DAY.

TUESDAY 05/21/19 – KATS RECEIVE HONORS AHEAD OF TOURNEY

THE SAM HOUSTON STATE BEARKATS FOLLOWED UP THEIR REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP BY DOMINATING THE ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE POSTSEASON TEAMS, INCLUDING FRESHMAN COLTON COWSER BEING NAMED THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE HITTER OF THE YEAR.  THE BEARKATS PUT SEVEN PLAYERS ALTOGETHER ON THE ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TEAMS, COWSER WAS ALSO NAMED TO THE FIRST TEAM AS AN OUTFIELDER,  AS WELL AS HUNTER HEARN, HAYDEN WESNESKI AND RILEY MCKNIGHT.  SENIORS CLAYTON HARP AND JORDAN CANNON EARNED SECOND-TEAM HONORS, WHILE JACK ROGERS WAS NAMED TO THE THIRD TEAM. JUNIORS GAVIN JOHNSON AND NICK MIKOLAJCHAK BOTH EARNED AN HONORABLE-MENTION NOD.

THE GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS BECAME THE FIRST TEAM SINCE THE 1966 BOSTON CELTICS TO LAND A SPOT IN FIVE CONSECUTIVE N-B-A FINALS, WITH THEIR 119-117, OVERTIME VICTORY LAST NIGHT, SWEEPING THE TRAILBLAZERS IN THE WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS.  THE WARRIORS NOW COOL THEIR HEELS AND WAIT ON THE MILWAUKEE-TORONTO OUTCOME.  THE BUCKS LEAD THAT SERIES, 2-1, WITH GAME 4 TONIGHT AT 7:30 IN TORONTO.

THE ASTROS SHUT OUT THE WHITE SOX YESTERDAY, 3-0.  THEY PLAY AGAIN TONIGHT AT 7:10.  THE RANGERS EDGED OUT SEATTLE IN A SLUGFEST, 10-9, AND THEY PLAY AGAIN THIS EVENING AT 7:00.

GOBEARKATS.COM IS REPORTING SAM HOUSTON STATE SENIOR HUNTER HEARN WAS NAMED THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE HITTER OF THE WEEK FOR A SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK, AFTER HE HELPED THE BEARKATS CAPTURE THE OUTRIGHT SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE SEASON TITLE OVER THE WEEKEND. THE BEARKATS WILL ENTER THIS WEEK’S SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT AS THE NO. 1 SEED AND BEGIN PLAY ON WEDNESDAY AGAINST NO. 8  TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI. THE ASTROS 10-GAME WIN STREAK CAME TO AN END IN BOSTON YESTERDAY WITH THE 5-4 RED SOX VICTORY.  THE ASTROS ARE HEADED BACK HOME TO HOST THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX TUESDAY EVENING.

THE TEXAS RANGERS USED 10 INNING TO GET A 5-4 VICTORY OVER ST. LOUIS YESTERDAY.  THE RANGERS ARE BACK IN ARLINGTON TONIGHT TO BEGIN A SERIES AGAINST SEATTLE.

ACCORDING TO E-S-P-N, THE HOUSTON TEXANS HAVE RELEASED VETERAN TIGHT END RYAN GRIFFIN.  GRIFFIN IS FACING CHARGES OF VANDALISM AND PUBLIC INTOXICATION FOR ALLEGEDLY PUNCHING OUT A FRONT WINDOW IN A HOTEL LAST MONTH IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
