A star-studded compilation album celebrating the music of Fred Rogers, creator and host of the PBS children’s series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, was released recently, and it includes performances from The Monkees‘ Micky Dolenz, ex-Fifth Dimension members Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. and The Cowsills.
Thank You, Mister Rogers: Music & Memories is available now on CD, digitally and via streaming services. Among the other artists who contributed songs to the project are Vanessa Williams, Jon Secada, Sandi Patty, TV host Tom Bergeron and country singers Lee Greenwood and Kellie Pickler.
In a video promoting the album, Dolenz says he used to watch the program with his daughter Amy, and notes that Rogers “made little kids feel safe, and happy and warm and fuzzy and cozy, like a teddy bear or something like that.”
In a separate clip featuring The Cowsills, Paul Cowsill admits, “In our family…it was a bit harsh. Mister Rogers brought in a balance to our own home.” Adds his sister Susan, “Here’s this nice little man with his lovely sweater and sneakers and puppets that I adored telling me I’m OK to be me.”
Thank You, Mister Rogers also features a tune sung by actress/singer Rita Wilson, whose husband, Tom Hanks, stars in the new Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which opens this Friday.
The record’s final track, “Thank You for Being You,” is an original tribute tune written by the album’s producer, Dennis Scott, and featuring nearly all of the artists who contributed to the project. A video for the song premiered online this week.
