On September 11, 2001 an attack, coordinated by terrorists, killed around 3,000 people and damaged at least $10 billion dollars in property in the United States.

Four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists. Two crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon and another crashed into a field near Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A recorder was running when air traffic controllers in the area spotted the second plane headed for the World Trade Center . . . .

Terrorist Osama bin Laden later claimed responsibility for the attacks. Following a search that lasted a decade, American special forces shot and killed bin Laden who was living in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 2, 2011.
